World of Matter – the visual culture of resource politics
Contemporary discourses are significantly shaped by the images used to represent them. This is particularly true of the intensive discussions that have taken place in recent years about the use of resources and the consequences of human impact on our planet.
The actual locations of resource extraction are often spatially remote, inaccessible due to natural conditions or operational interests and are therefore usually outside of our own world of experience. In addition to abstract statistics, we primarily know about the mining of tar sands in Alaska, offshore oil platforms and the rapid expansion of export-oriented industrial agriculture in Africa through images.
The aim of the World of Matter multimedia platform – presented to the public for the first time in Brussels on 19 October 2013 – is to expand the current resource discussion with new images and new image contexts.
